Saluting Achievement
Annual ceremony honors award-winning students, faculty, alumni and staff
The UVA Alumni Association’s Board of Managers saluted past accomplishments and paved the way for new ones at its spring meeting.
Lisa O. Gardner (Col class of ’79) was elected to take the reins as the board’s chairman, with Stephen A. Riddick (Col class of ’85) as vice chair. They acknowledged the contributions of Allen B. Rider III (Col ’76, GSBA ’83), who completed his term as chairman on June 30, and other retiring board members, Whittington W. Clement (Col class of ’70, Law class of ’74), Eileen F. Edmunds (Col class of ’88, Law class of ’94), Jason A. Gill (Col class of ’94), John T.W. Hawkins (Col class of ’76), Timothy J. Ingrassia (Col class of ’86), Edward C. Mitchell Jr. (Col class of ’63) and Richard B. Payne Jr. (Col class of ’70).
The board elected the following alumni to renewable three-year terms, which began July 1: Atiim “Tiki” K. Barber (Com class of ’97); Elizabeth P. Foster (Com class of ’82); Alexander B. “Brit” Hume (Col class of ’65); Timothy G. O’Shea (Com ’81, GSBA ’85); Noreen L. Poulson (Col class of ’78); Bryant L. Stith (Col class of ’92); and Michele T. Tarbet (Nurs class of ’74).
The following awards were presented at the April 25 event:
The Alumni Association Ernest H. Ern Distinguished Student Award to Sarah M. Boschung (Nurs class of ’08)
The Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award to Maria C. Salazar, assistant to the dean of the McIntire School of Commerce
The Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award to chemistry professor W. Dean Harman
The Young Alumni Council Service Award to Gordon F. Rainey Jr. (Col class of ’62, Law class of ’67) and James Fang (Engr class of ’95)
The Gray-Carrington Award to Christina Polenta (Com class of ’09)
The Kelly O’Hara Memorial Scholarship to Veronica Rivera (Col class of ’09, Grad class of ’10) and Molly Crane Harrington (Col class of ’09)
The Dana H. Rowe Scholarship to Caitryn McCallum (Col class of ’10)
The Meikel Andrade Memorial Scholarship to Jennifer Bristol (Col class of ’11) and Amanda Oakes (Col class of ’10)
