Leaders for Time of Change

Wynne and Abramson to head Board of Visitors

John O. “Dubby” Wynne (Law ’71) of Virginia Beach began his two-year term as the University’s 40th rector in July. He succeeds W. Heywood Fralin (Col ’62) of Roanoke, who will remain on the board until 2012.

Wynne says that he and the board look forward to guiding the University through a number of major leadership changes, including the 2010 retirement of President John T. Casteen III. “The University has flourished under the extraordinary leadership of John Casteen and his senior leadership team,” Wynne said. “It will be the responsibility of this board to find an individual who can pick up President Casteen’s mantle and build on the work that he has accomplished these past 20 years.”

Wynne is the retired president and chief executive officer of Landmark Communications Inc. of Norfolk. He was a member of the Board of Managers of the UVA Alumni Association and a member of Princeton’s board.

Daniel R. Abramson (Col ’70) Dan Addison

Daniel R. Abramson (Col ’70), an Alexandria real estate developer, Vietnam veteran and former captain of the UVA soccer team, was elected vice rector and will succeed Wynne in 2011.

In related news, Alexander G. “Sandy” Gilliam Jr. (Col ’55) has retired as secretary to the board, a position he had held since 1991. “For 18 years, he served the board with remarkable wisdom, fairness and good sense,” Fralin said at Gilliam’s final board meeting in April.

Gilliam won’t be going far, however. After moving his office from the Rotunda to the Small Special Collections Library, he will take on a new role as the University’s protocol and history officer.
