Olympic Gold
Rower Lindsay Shoop and soccer player Angela Hucles have something in common, in addition to being former student-athletes at UVA.
Each brought home gold medals from the Olympics in Beijing this summer. Hucles (Col class of ’00) led the U.S. soccer team in scoring on the way to her second Olympic gold medal. Shoop (Col class of ’03) won as a member of the women’s eight-person rowing team.Two other rowers won bronze medals—Wyatt Allen (Col class of ’01) in the men’s eight squad and Melanie Kok (Col class of ’07) rowing for Canada in the women’s lightweight double sculls team.
Pro Picks
When the Women’s Professional Soccer league held its first general draft this fall, two former Cavalier stars went in the first round.
Former All-Americans Sarah Huffman (Educ class of ’07, Grad class of ’07) and Becky Sauerbrunn (Col class of ’09) were picked first and third, respectively, by the Washington Freedom. Fellow Cavalier Lori Lindsey (Col class of ’03), also an All-American while at UVA, was picked in the third round, 17th overall, by the Freedom.
The WPS will field seven teams when play begins in April.
Living Legend
Football standout Tiki Barber, the all-time leading rusher for the Cavaliers, was selected this fall to join 11 other athletes as ACC Football Championship Game Legends.
Barber (Com class of ’97) rushed for 3,389 yards in his career, including 19 games of 100 yards or more, still a school record. He went on to lead the New York Giants in rushing as well during a 10-season career that ended with his retirement in 2006.
In the Pool
Second-year Scot Robison will join an elite group of U.S. swimmers headed to Serbia in July.
Robison (Col class of ’11) was one of 26 swimmers named to the 2009 World University Games roster based on his performance at the U.S. Open Championships in Minneapolis this summer. At that meet, he finished third in both the 100-meter free and the 200-meter free, as well as 11th in the 100-meter butterfly.
Honoring Dr. McCue
Jeff Jones (Col class of ’82), former UVA men’s basketball player and coach, and current head coach at American University, was the keynote speaker at this year’s McCue Society meeting in June. Named in honor of Dr. Frank C. McCue III (Col class of ’52, Med class of ’56), professor emeritus of orthopaedic surgery and longtime director of sports medicine and team physician at UVA, the society provides a forum for sports medicine research and provides scholarships for students in the field.
