Cavalier Athletes Heading to the Big Leagues
Pro football teams reached out to four UVA players in the NFL draft this spring. Offensive tackle Eugene Monroe (Col class of ’09) was picked in the first round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Others selected were linebacker Clint Sintim (Col class of ’09), New York Giants; tailback Cedric Peerman (Col class of ’08, Educ class of ’11), Baltimore Ravens; and tight end John Phillips (Col class of ’09), Dallas Cowboys.
In the Major League Baseball draft, five Cavaliers were tagged by pro teams: pitchers Andrew Carraway (Com class of ’09), Seattle Mariners; Jeff Lorick (Col class of ’10), Atlanta Braves; Robert Poutier (Engr class of ’12), San Diego Padres; Matt Packer (Col class of ’10), Cleveland Indians; and shortstop Tyler Cannon (Col class of ’10), Pittsburgh Pirates.
In men’s lacrosse, attackman Danny Glading (Col class of ’09) was a first-round pick by the Washington Bayhawks. The Toronto Nationals selected two other Cavaliers, long-stick midfielder Mike Timms (Col class of ’08, Grad class of ’12) and attackman Garrett Billings (Col class of ’09).
In women’s basketball, Lyndra Littles (Col class of ’09) was drafted by the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA.
