Ryan begins shaping his team

Moving up his start to August 1, two months earlier than originally planned, UVA President-elect James E. Ryan (Law ’92) has charged two search committees with identifying candidates to be the University’s next provost and next chief operating officer, both executive vice president-level positions. They will succeed Tom Katsouleas and Pat Hogan, who both agreed to stay in their current roles until successors are selected. Each committee is composed of members of the University community, including deans, students, professors and Board of Visitors members.

“Tom and Pat have served the University with distinction, and I remain grateful to each of them for their continued service to the University,” Ryan said in his announcement about the transition.

Ryan, who studied and later taught law here, appointed former UVA Law School Dean John Jeffries (Law ’73) as senior vice president for advancement, a three-year position, to oversee UVA’s next capital campaign.

In May, Gloria S. Graham started as associate vice president for safety and security, a post created in response to last summer’s violence. She held a similar position at Northwestern University. University Police Chief Michael Gibson has announced his retirement, ending his 36 years with UPD, 11 as chief.
