Albert Barnett Reynolds of Charlottesville died Oct. 29, 2024. He held a bachelor’s degree in physics, a master’s degree in nuclear engineering, and a doctorate in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1968, he joined the nuclear engineering faculty at UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. He served as chair of the department from 1992 to 1996. Before landing at UVA, he served on the MIT faculty and worked at General Electric’s nuclear energy business. A longtime member of the American Nuclear Society, he became a fellow in 1986 for his research on fast-spectrum nuclear-reactor safety. He received the organization’s public education award in 2002 for innovations in education about nuclear science. He co-authored the 1981 book Fast Breeder Reactors. He also authored the book Bluebells and Nuclear Energy, used for science teacher workshops. He loved sports and played recreational tennis until he was 85. He also loved music and took up violin and old-time fiddling later in life. Survivors include his wife, Helen; two daughters; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
