Kenton “Kent” Mark Clayton (Law ’90 CM) of Irvine, California, died Jan. 9, 2025. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of Miami before pursuing his law degree at UVA. He began his legal career at Milbank, where he played a pioneering role in renewable energy deals. Over the next two decades, he worked at several law firms in Southern California, focusing on technology startups, venture capital, and mergers and acquisitions. Later he launched his own practice, becoming a trailblazer for startups at the forefront of space development. He crafted contracts enabling a U.S. supplier to deliver NASA space data and to provide commercial services for communications networks—a significant milestone in the industry. Though law was his professional calling, music was his passion. His peers celebrated him as a talented composer and arranger, and he performed on the electric bass throughout his life. Survivors include his wife, Junko; and his daughter.
Joshua B. Rubinstein (Col ’97 CM) of Richmond, Virginia, died Sept. 2, 2024. While studying economics at UVA, he was a proud member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and later served on its executive board. He also studied dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. He served as chairman of the board of trustees for the Virginia and North Carolina chapters of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and he was awarded “Man of the Year” for his fundraising for the organization. He served on the board of directors of the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond. An avid golfer, he took pride in having attended the Masters Tournament one year with friends. He taught sailing at his daughters’ summer camp. His loved ones remember him for his soft smile, unwavering loyalty and even-tempered nature. Survivors include his wife, Beth; two daughters, Allison “Ally” Rubinstein (Col class of ’28) and Sammi; and his brother, Justin Rubinstein (Col class of ’01).
