David M. Fischer (Col ’84) of New York City died Aug. 5, 2009. At the University, he was a member of the Jazz Ensemble, the University Orchestra and the U.Va. Pep Band. He was a freelance writer who had previously worked for LIFE magazine as the editor of the letters to the editor section. Among other publications, he contributed to Our Times: The Illustrated History of the 20th Century. Mr. Fischer authored a Ted Turner biography and maintained two blogs, Gluten-Free NYC, a guide to New York City for people following a gluten-free diet, and Blog About Town, an arts and entertainment blog. He was an avid reader and reviewer who worked throughout his career for the New York State Council on the Arts, attending and reviewing performances by artists and organizations who had received funding from the council. Mr. Fischer regularly attended concerts, plays and other performances. He had many interests and loved exploring all that New York had to offer. Survivors include his mother, a sister and a nephew.

Blair Roberts Holston Moseley (Col ’84 L/M) of Lynchburg, Va., died Aug. 3, 2013. At the University, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Ms. Moseley served as director of operations for the Consolidated Shoe Co., where she worked for more than 25 years. She served on the board of directors for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Central Virginia from 1998 to 2005 and was the driving force for the annual CASA Heart & Sole Shoe Market for 14 years. Ms. Moseley volunteered with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Virginia, where she served on the board of directors and was voted “Big Sister of the Year,” and was an active fundraiser for a number of organizations, including the James River Day School and the Lynchburg Humane Society. Survivors include her husband, Cary Powell Moseley (Col ’88); and their daughter; a brother; and a nephew, Walter Brown Holston IV (Col ’11 L/M).

Philip E. Boyer (Col ’88 L/M) of Hampton, Va., died Sept. 15, 2013. At the University, he was a member of the Cavalier Daily staff. He worked as a designer and, most recently, as a QID inspector at the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. Mr. Boyer was an avid motorcyclist who loved flying planes. Survivors include his wife, Melanie Lumadue Boyer (Nurs ’92) and their two sons; his parents; and five siblings, including a brother, Peter Boyer (Col ’92).
