Peter Hufford Lowry (Law class of ’72) of Camden, Maine, and formerly of Cincinnati, died April 17, 2024. He was a veteran of both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard before spending four years in active duty with the Marine Corps, with one year in Vietnam. He received his law degree from UVA and worked as a lawyer in Washington, D.C. At age 38, he switched careers, attending medical school and reentering military service as an Army physician. He commanded a clinic in South Korea and was chief of primary care at the Army hospital in Fort Eustis, Virginia. In 1993 he took a position in the occupational medicine department at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, remaining there until 2001. After a few more active-duty assignments, he was a staff physician at the U.S. Army hospital at Fort Knox, Kentucky, until his retirement in 2013. He spent most of his retirement in Maine, working on an old family farmhouse and enjoying his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; four children; and three grandchildren.Col. Gerald “Jerry” Huml (Educ class of ’73) of Blacksburg, Virginia, died May 11, 2024. He graduated from Cornell College in Iowa in 1961 with a bachelor’s in physical education and was immediately commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in locations including Vietnam, Okinawa and Berlin. He received major medals for his service, including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. He earned his master’s degree in education from UVA in 1973 and served as UVA’s Marine Corps ROTC instructor for three years. After retiring from the Marines in 1990, he served as the Marine Junior ROTC instructor at Highland Springs High School in Highland Springs, Virginia, for five years. He enjoyed playing sports, fishing and spending time at the beach in Emerald Isle, North Carolina. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ann; three children, including Dina Hyde (Col ’85 CM); son-in-law David Hyde (Engr ’84 CM); five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Gerald Randall “Randy” Bonney Jr. (Col class of ’76) of McLean, Virginia, died April 18, 2024. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from UVA and his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a certified public accountant. He took great pride in his work, holding financial and treasury management positions at MCI and Intelsat. Most recently, he was employed at American Systems as corporate finance and risk manager. He was a voracious reader, an avid music lover (a lifelong Deadhead), and a dedicated father to his daughters and his two West Highland terriers. His favorite vacations included visiting Notre Dame in Paris and listening to live jazz in New Orleans. Survivors include his wife, Carol; two daughters; and three brothers.
