Martin James Votaw (Engr ’46 CM) of Santa Barbara, California, died Aug. 6, 2015. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from UVA. After graduation, he became a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory. In 1963, he joined the newly commissioned Communications Satellite Corp. He later worked with Satellite Business Systems and International Maritime Satellite in London, retiring in 1983. He enjoyed making wooden toys for his children and grandchildren and crafting furniture and gadgets for the home. He also enjoyed sailing off the coast of Southern California and in the Chesapeake Bay. Survivors include his wife, Merna; six children, including Martin J. Votaw Jr. (Engr class of ’80) and Janet Lynn Votaw (Engr ’81 CM); and a brother.Norman Lee DeBay (Col class of ’49) of Sugar Land, Texas, died Sept. 20, 2024. He served as a Navy aircraft carrier pilot before studying chemical engineering at UVA, where he was a member of the men’s basketball team. He transferred to Grove City College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. After graduation, he began a 32-year career with Gulf Oil, working in its Pittsburgh, New York City and Houston offices. He retired in 1983 as vice president and comptroller of Gulf Oil Exploration & Production Co., which was acquired by Chevron Corp. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time at his church and playing golf. Survivors include two children, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 10 nieces and nephews.
