Richard Hall Henry (Col ’38) of Philadelphia died April 11, 2015. At the University, he was a member of the tennis and track and field teams, Chi Phi fraternity and the Virginia Players, and lived on the Lawn for two years. He served in the U.S. Navy for 35 years, retiring in 1976 with the rank of captain. Capt. Henry met his wife, Paulette, after he landed as one of six naval combat intelligence officers in the Allies’ invasion of southern France at Sainte-Maxime during World War II on Aug. 15, 1944. An accomplished tennis player, he competed in the 1951 Wimbledon Championships. After retiring from the Navy, he worked in international tourism, a career he considered his “gateway to peace.” Capt. Henry had a passion for writing poetry and travel narratives, and enjoyed acting in community theater. Survivors include three daughters and four grandchildren.
