Howard S. Tuthill (Com ’39, Law ’41 L/M) of Naples, Florida, died July 8, 2015. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. At the University, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and served as editor of the Virginia Law Review. Mr. Tuthill began his legal career in 1941 at the firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City. After serving in World War II he returned to the firm and focused his practice on litigation and trust and estate matters. In 1951 he moved to Cummings & Lockwood in Stamford, Connecticut, where he practiced until he retired in 2013. Mr. Tuthill played a key role in the firm’s growth from 14 lawyers in a single office to a firm with offices in Connecticut—in Stamford, Greenwich and West Hartford—and in Florida—in Naples, Palm Beach and Bonita Springs. He served on the trust board of Citibank until its dissolution in 1979 and was a director of McGraw-Hill Inc. from 1974 to 1989. An avid sportsman who enjoyed golfing, skiing, hunting, fishing, scuba diving, white water rafting and kayaking, he loved to travel with his wife to exotic locations. He loved spending time with his family and colleagues. Survivors include a daughter; three sons, including Howard S. Tuthill III (Law ’72); eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
