Lynn Rhea Hammond (Col ’38) of Roanoke, Virginia, died Jan. 15, 2015. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. At the University, he was a member of the golf team and Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduating, he studied photolithography processes at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) and returned to his hometown of Roanoke to implement the innovative techniques at his family’s business, Hammond’s Printing and Litho Works. For many years, Hammond’s was the only printer in western Virginia that used photolithography processes. Mr. Hammond later took over the company from his father and merged it with his brother’s printing business. An accomplished golfer, he was the longest-term member at the Roanoke Country Club, where he won the club golf championship three times. Mr. Hammond, who was known for his graciousness and humility, was active in many local organizations, including the Business Men’s Club, the Roanoke German Club and the Kiwanis Club. An avid photographer, he developed extensive collections of photos of local scenery, wildflowers, mushrooms and more. Survivors include four sons, including Lynn R. Hammond III (Darden ’66), Charles Reif Hammond (Engr ’81, ’83 L/M) and John Barnett Hammond (Engr ’86, ’89 L/M); 10 grandchildren, including Oliver Byron Hammond (Engr ’16); eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albin Hammond (Col ’57).
