Charles McMurdo (Engr ’29) of Richmond, Va., died Dec. 31, 2011. At 105 years of age, he was the oldest living alumnus of the University. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Trigon Engineering Society and the Raven Society. Mr. McMurdo was awarded the Isabella Merrick Sampson Scholarship for three years in the Department of Engineering and was on the dean’s list. He held an instructorship in physics at the University for two years and an instructorship in engineering drawing for two quarters. He also taught electrical engineering at the Engineering, Science, and Management War Training evening extension school of the University during World War II. After graduation, Mr. McMurdo began his career as an electrical engineer with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. of Virginia, which later became Verizon, in 1930 in Richmond, Va. He retired from C&P in 1971. He was a past president of the Central Virginia Engineer’s Club, a past chairman of the Richmond section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a past chairman of the American Society for Quality Control. He was a registered professional engineer in Virginia. Survivors include a son, C. Keith McMurdo (Col ’66 L/M).
