Joel B. Smith (Grad ’90) of Kinston, North Carolina, died Sept. 17, 2015. A computer professional in his work, he had many hobbies, including pottery, disc golfing, gardening and photography. Mr. Smith served on the board of the Kinston/Lenoir County Parks & Recreation Department and supported the Lenoir County farmers market. He was creative, kind and encouraging to everyone he met. Mr. Smith generously gave his time and talents to many people in his community, often providing computer assistance to nonprofits, donating pottery for fundraisers and organizing charity disc golf tournaments for local food banks and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He loved growing tomatoes and eating them straight from the garden. Survivors include his wife, his parents and many extended family members.

Joan M. Wilkinson-Berger (Arch ’91 L/M) of Manhasset, New York, died Aug. 12, 2015. She was a supervisory administrative specialist with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where she designed and managed FBI facilities in the New York City area. Ms. Wilkinson-Berger was a devoted mother who dedicated herself to raising her children. She was also a health enthusiast, a physical fitness instructor and avid runner. Survivors include her husband and four children, including Ryan Berger (Com ’14 L/M).

Geoffrey Sean Bald (Law ’95) of Springfield, Virginia, died July 22, 2015. He was a volunteer with the Wounded Warrior Project and at a local humane society facility. Survivors include three daughters, two brothers and his parents.
