Mark Cathey (Med class of ’09) of Durham, N.C., died Dec. 1, 2011. At the University, he was a member of the Medical School’s chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Dr. Cathey served his residency as a pediatric physician at Duke Children’s Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Previs Cathey (Med class of ’09).

Sydney E. Owens (Col class of ’09) of Charlotte, N.C., died Jan. 14, 2011. At the University, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and a Lawn resident. Following graduation, she traveled to Tanzania to teach in an elementary school and explore many of the wonders of Africa. She later moved to Boulder, Colo., where she worked for Intela, before moving to Denver to work for DaVita. Memorials may be made to the U.Va. Fund, P.O. Box 400314, Charlottesville, VA 22907, in memory of Sydney Elizabeth Owens for a scholarship in her name; or Semester at Sea, P.O.
