Notices sorted by graduation date

Nell P. Wright (Nurs class of ’44) of Raleigh, North Carolina, died June 13, 2023. She earned her nursing degree at UVA. After graduation, she served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a second lieutenant stationed at locations including Fort Rucker, Camp Butner and Fort Benning. After World War II ended, she worked at Richmond Psychiatric Hospital before leaving the nursing field to take care of her family. She later returned to nursing, working at Virginia Tech Student Health (now known as Schiffert Health Center). In 2011, she participated in the Flight of Honor program, which flew World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to view the newly erected memorial for their service. She loved volunteering—leading groups like Newcomers and Go-Getters—and had a keen interest in helping wounded veterans. She loved to read, discuss books and play dominos with her neighbors. She was known as a great Southern cook, famous for her pork tenderloin and her gravy and biscuit breakfast. Survivors include two children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
