Gold and Silver
Ryan Zimmerman (Col ’06), former UVA third baseman, received two major awards for his outstanding play last season with the Washington Nationals. On Nov. 11, he snagged his first Gold Glove award for fielding, and the following day MLB awarded him the National League’s 2009 Silver Slugger Award at third base. Zimmerman, who hit .292 with 33 home runs and 106 RBI, also made his first All-Star appearance in 2009.
Head women’s basketball coach Debbie Ryan (Educ ’77) notched her 700th career win at UVA when the team opened its season Nov. 13 with a 68-57 win over UMBC. Guard Monica Wright also reached a high point this season by becoming UVA’s all-time scoring leader. Against Maryland on Jan. 11, Wright scored 20 points to bring her career total to 2,140, surpassing Dawn Staley’s (Col ’92) mark of 2,135.
Defensive tackle Nate Collins’ breakout season—16 tackles against Georgia Tech, an interception returned for a touchdown against Maryland, six sacks and 77 tackles for the year—earned him the Defensive Lineman of the Year award from the Touchdown Club of Richmond. Collins (Col ’10) also was a first-team All-ACC selection.
We’re No. 2
In the national Directors’ Cup competition, which reflects schools’ performances in NCAA championships, UVA held the No. 2 spot among Division I schools at the close of the fall season. The men’s soccer championship (worth 100 points) and the field hockey team’s semifinal appearance (worth 83 points) helped UVA compile 337 points, second only to Stanford with 370. The field hockey team also set a program record with 20 wins this season.
