New Jefferson coins issued

The Thomas Jefferson $1 coin

The nickel and the two-dollar bill now have some company—two new coins have ties to Thomas Jefferson.

The Thomas Jefferson $1 Coin—the third coin in the United States Mint’s new Presidential $1 Coin series—was introduced on Aug. 16. The golden-colored Jefferson coins can be purchased on the United States Mint’s Web site.

Another new series of $10 gold coins honors the spouses of American presidents. Because Jefferson had been a widower for 19 years prior to his presidency, there was no First Lady to honor. Instead, his coin depicts Lady Liberty and, on the obverse, an image of his gravestone.
