UVa Rowers Savor View from Atop NCAA
The congratulatory e-mails have poured in all week, from New Zealand and Australia and England and Canada and across the United States.
“It’s been fantastic,” said Kevin Sauer, the head coach of the UVa women’s rowing team since its inception in 1995.
There have been untold phone calls, too, including the one Sauer took in California on Sunday from a guy whose office is a couple doors down from his in the McCue Center, George Gelnovatch.
In 2009, his 14th season as men’s soccer coach at UVa, Gelnovatch won his first NCAA title, after which he told reporters, “I knew it would come.”

Shabaz, Courtney team up for title
The Virginia doubles team of Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney won the national doubles championship Monday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. The unseeded Cavalier duo, ranked No. 14 nationally entering the tournament, toppled second-seeded John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren of Tennessee, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3.
“I don’t know if it has sunk in yet that I am a NCAA champion,” Courtney said. “I played well and really just tried to enjoy myself on the court and to enjoy the moment. I am excited for not only the win, but for the future.”
