Leonard Sandridge
The University of Virginia is celebrating Leonard Sandridge’s nearly half century of service on grounds. The executive vice president and chief operating officer is stepping down at the end of this school year.
On Monday, co-workers and students honored the Crozet-native. Leonard Sandridge prefers to keep things low-key, and as his university coworkers will tell you, he shies away from the spotlight. But on Monday, the attention was all on Sandridge and his 44 years of leadership at UVA.
More than a thousand university employees, students, family and friends filled the floor and stands at the John Paul Jones Arena this afternoon for a picnic to honor Sandridge.
He joined the university’s internal audit office in 1967 and worked his way up to executive vice president and chief operating officer. Sandridge is described as an understated problem-solver who made the university efficient and effective.
“You can only do your best,” said Sandridge, “and if we’ve done our best and done it with integrity and with respect to those we work with, that’s all we can ask for.”
Former UVA President John Casteen said of Sandridge, “He has an attitude toward the university and its people, and indeed toward the state and its people, that says simply his job is to enable people to do what they do.”
