Hall of Famer

Cherie Greer (Col ’94), a three-time first-team All-American while at U.Va., will be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in November. A leader on two NCAA championship teams for the Cavaliers, Greer played on four women’s lacrosse World Cup teams and twice was voted the most outstanding player of the World Cup championship games.

Best in the Nation

Dominic Inglot (Com ’09) and Michael Shabaz (Col ’11) rallied from a set down to beat Tennessee’s John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren for the NCAA men’s tennis doubles crown in May. Seeded 12th entering the tournament, Inglot and Shabaz became the first doubles team from the ACC to win the national title. The victory was their 41st of the season, a U.Va. record.

A Good Year

First in the state, eighth in the nation—that’s where separate groups ranked U.Va. in terms of the overall success of its athletics programs last academic year.

By winning 64.8 percent of its intercollegiate athletic contests in 2008-09, U.Va. was named the all-sport champion by the Virginia Sports Information Director’s Association. On a national scale, the University tied its best-ever rating by finishing eighth in the Director’s Cup, sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Golfers Make History

U.Va.’s women’s golf team finished eighth at the NCAA championships at Caves Valley Golf Club, Md., the first top-10 showing in the program’s history. Calle Nielson (Col ’11) led the team by shooting 1 under par over the final 36 holes to finish tied for sixth overall.

Baseball First

Ryan Zimmerman (Col ’06), star third baseman for the Washington Nationals, became the first U.Va. alumnus to earn a spot in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Zimmerman, who posted a 30-game hitting streak earlier this season, was voted a reserve to the July 14 game.
