Greats Acknowledged

Lacrosse great Tom Duquette (Col ’75) and football coach George Welsh have been tapped for induction to the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Duquette was a four-time All-American, and Welsh led the Cavaliers to the first bowl game in school history.

Coach Dom Starsia also was named to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He has led U.Va.’s teams to three national championships.

First-year Sensations

ACC Freshman of the Year honors went to Paige Selenski in field hockey and Tony Tchani in soccer. Selenski, also named National Rookie of the Year, tallied 17 goals to lead the Cavaliers’ scoring, and Tchani scored nine goals before a season-ending injury in October.

Best of Blockers

Tackle Eugene Monroe garnered numerous laurels for his offensive line play. Named a second-team All-American, he also was first-team All-ACC and Offensive Lineman of the Year in Virginia.

Net Gains

Volleyball standouts Lauren Dickson and Shannon Davis were voted to all-state teams by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. Dickson, a hitter, was named to the all-state first team; Davis, a blocker, to the second team.
