Catching Up

Do you ever wonder what’s up with former athletes who inspired U.Va. fans with their heroics? Here’s a look at one U.Va. athlete who has achieved success in a different calling.

Whitney Casey

Hometown: Tampa, Fla.

Cavalier years: 1994-97 (transferred from the University of Southern California). Casey was already a volleyball star when she came to U.Va. The Cavaliers were 1-31 the season before her arrival and improved to 24-10 her final year. She led the team in kills, digs and service aces each season, served as team captain in the 1996 season and was named an Academic All-American. In 1997, Casey received U.Va.’s David F. Cooke Award for her leadership and athletic and academic achievements.

After U.Va.: Though her degree was in exercise science, Casey found a niche in television journalism. After stints in Macon, Ga., and Miami, she landed a correspondent’s job with CBS in New York. Her first day on the job was Sept. 10, 2001—the day before the terrorist attacks on the U.S. She covered other high-profile events, such as the 2003 explosion of the space shuttle Columbia, served briefly as a news anchor, hosted and produced a TV talk show in Houston and in recent years wrote a weekly column for the Houston Chronicle.

Up to lately: Casey’s book, The Man Plan: Drive Men Wild—Not Away, was published in January 2009, and she recently launched her own production company, Whitney Casey Productions, in Austin, Texas.

Funny memory: “The men’s swim team came to one of our games at Mem Gym and took off a piece of clothing for every point we made, then did pushups in the center of the court in only their Speedos.”
