14 Reasons to Love Charlottesville in Winter

1. Sledding

When snow finally arrives in Charlottesville, students and townspeople alike flock to the white, glistening hillsides with sleds, toboggans or whatever they have on hand. Among previous conveyances: a canoe careening down the hill in Washington Park and discarded election signs whooshing down slopes near the Dell and O-Hill.

I miss living in C-Ville every day. I look forward to every Labor Weekend. When I pack the family in the car and head down from New Jersey. BTW, go Hoos Hockey!

Steam "bases'...we would race to be the first "on base". Library time was the best if not under the immediate pressure of a paper. Fun look at UVa/C-ville in her winter garb.

This photo and description of the "..Midwinters Dance at Memorial Gym in 1955" puzzles me. I am sure that I was at that dance then, but I remember that the featured band was Louis Armstrong. Please check the date of the photos. Can someone help me?

The recent snowy photos remind me of my visit to UVa in February 2010 - a wonderful experience, but I am also enjoying today in Bendigo, Australia, where it is 98F, and absolutely no chance of snow!

We had a LEGENDARY snowball fight in the Old Dorms courtyard near Kent my first year. There we like 60 people there!

Great pictures, the 14 reasons to love C'Ville makes me smile, think of Valentine's day, and the beauty of UVA's campus. But would also love to see more diversity in your photos, for example sororities, students romping in the snow, not just those playing wonderful basketball for the school.

I see my parents in the front row of the crowd watching the Tommy Dorsey band! Thanks for the treat.

Those weren't just boxing memories bouncing around Memorial gym. Many memorable ACC basketball games were held there, one in particular I remember from the early 60s featured the amazing (later NBA star) Billy Cunningham dribbling a ball off a lump in the floor and out of bounds. He was so frustrated by the bizarre floor and raucous fans that he scored only 7 points. We still lost by dozens, but it was fun.

Never knew that John Belushi was a "HOO"!

The indoor track was a great seat from which to watch a basketball game; feet hanging over and arms over the railing to prevent a fall onto the floor.

  • Patrick Holyfield on February 16, 2012

I remember sledding down O-Hill my first year after a major snow-storm... on cafeteria trays no less. :)

2 more from nearby - the quiet of Monticello after a snowfall (and devoid of crowds); hiking to Humpback Rocks on a clear January night - incredible stargazing.

Pretty sure the best thing about C-Ville in the winter is the knowledge that spring will be there in 3 months and everyone will be gearing up for the Foxfield Races. In my day it was Easters and it was wonderful.

I still remember Virginia's win in Memorial Gymnasium over Jerry West and our biggest foe then, the West Virginia Mountaineers in around 1960. I think I was seated on the running track above the gym floor. The place went wild that night. There was a closeness and commaraderie among students which is unforgettable to this day, and I'm now in my eighth decade.

I remember the big snow storm of '71 I believe. I remember it was quite cold that winter and, because we weren't allowed fridges, we put milk and other items on our window ledges. Great fun with the snow ball fights, building snowmen, etc. Miss UVA!

The one thing we didn't have as the first class of women was sororities. As I recall there was only one and it wasn't terribly active. The one thing I missed being in that class.

    This list is pathetic.

Charlottesville and UVA have hundreds of reasons to love it. These are 14 reasons, but those who live here could go on forever. Cville is a one of a kind city, so glad to be living here and loving it. It continues to even get better, which is surprising because didnt think there was anything that is missing. Come and enjoy and see why Cville and UVA are so special.

About the photo of the Midwinters dance in Memorial Gym in 1955, I was there then, and my recollection is that it was Louis Armstrong who was the "headliner", not Ziggy Elman. This was photo #10 in the segment, "14 Reasons to Love Charlottesville in Winter." Can someone help me out on this?

The one thing that I loved the most about winter in C'ville was how short it was! And I loved seeing the picture of Mem Gym...you can have all your fancy fitness centers, no better place to run indoors.

  • SEA on February 16, 2012

Mem Gym special indeed.I saw Peter Paul& Mary Ray Charles& Joan Baez there.Roosevelt spoke there& from what I've heard the NCAA boxing matches(Virginia was a power)were something to behold. Most men more Tux.A special place.Thank goodness UVA saved the place.
