Dell Hathaway Hymes of Charlottesville died Nov. 13, 2009. Mr. Hymes taught successively at Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the departments of anthropology and folklore and then served as dean of the Graduate School of Education for 12 years. In 1987, he came to the University to teach anthropology and English, eventually becoming a emeritus Commonwealth Professor of Anthropology. His sociolinguistics research centered on Native American language and culture, and his fieldwork at the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon continued throughout his life. He was also a published poet.
