James F. “Jim” Smith (Com ’82 L/M) of Cary, Illinois, died Sept. 29, 2014. At the University, Mr. Smith was a member of the Air Force ROTC, the Honor System Study Committee, Student Council, Commerce Council, and the men’s track and field and cross country teams. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 32 years, attaining the rank of Brigadier General. In addition to his Air Force career, Mr. Smith was a partner in the Chicago law firm of Butler Pappas. His dual career required constant international travel. His passion for travel was ignited when he spent the summer of 1981 studying international banking as part of his McIntire School of Commerce degree. He returned to London the following summer to serve as a teaching assistant for Professor Larry Pettit (Darden ’72) in that same program. An avid youth sports coach, he also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife and their three sons; his parents; three sisters, including Kelly Smith Wardell (Col ’00 L/M); and a brother Stephen Smith (Com ’89 L/M). Craig T. Marshall (Arch ’84) of Hamilton, New Jersey, died Feb. 12, 2015. He was the planning director for the Township of South Brunswick, New Jersey, for 18 years before becoming a planner for Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency for two years. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, his father and a brother.
