Congratulations to George Garmany (Col ’69, Med ’74) who won a $25 gift card to the UVA Bookstore for correctly answering that this is a detail of the pediment frieze on Old Cabell Hall. It features Truth, appearing above a Greek inscription from John 8:23, which translates to “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Artist: George Julian Zolnay ca. 1898.

See some of the hidden remnants uncovered during the Rotunda restoration, including a chemical hearth and cistern.
The Rotunda at sunset, by Andrew Shea (Arch ’17)
In addition to the difficult task of rebuilding the foundation of the building, the Rotunda was brought up to date on WiFi and other tech.
The Rotunda has always suffered from a leaky roof. From tin-coated shingles to painted copper, learn how the problem was finally solved.
See how workers were able to hoist more than two tons of glass to the top of the Rotunda's dome to replace the historic oculus.
The updated Rotunda clock provides automatic seasonal changes and the ability to restore time after a power failure, among other features.
One of the more visible features of the restoration are the replacement capitals, commissioned from Italy using Jefferson's original specifications.
