The award was announced in October by New Letters magazine, an international magazine of writing and art published at the University of Missouri-Kansas City that gives this award annually for excellence in essay writing. Ms. Bunch has also been published in Fugue and Gulf Coast, who nominated her story for a 2008 Pushcart Prize. She also received third prize in the Playboy College Fiction Contest and was an honorable mention in The Atlantic Monthly for their 2005 student contest in nonfiction. Dr. James is an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s division of maternal fetal medicine at Duke University Medical Center. She is a nationally recognized expert on von Willebrand disease. She was also the recipient of the National Hemophilia Foundation’s first Project Red Flag Renée Paper Award of Excellence.  Educating women and physicians and generating more awareness about bleeding disorders is central to James’ work. As a member of the National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s von Willebrand Disease Expert Panel, she helped craft new guidelines in 2008 for diagnosing and treating the disease. The Atrium is the newest venue at Lincoln Center, the world’s largest performing arts organization. Since arriving in New York in November 2003, Mr. Murray has designed or collaborated on more than 400 productions. Mr. Murray met Joe Saint (Grad ’92) during their time at U.Va.’s Department of Drama, and work together for IMCD Lighting, Mr. Saint as president and Mr. Murray as a freelance lighting designer. He has taught classes and workshops at The Juilliard School, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Mellon. At Walden University, he is in his first year of doctoral study pursuing a Ph.D. in education.
