      <description>Joan Tabourn Hughes (Com ’77 L/M) was included in the U.S. Department of the Navy’s “Tribute to African&#45;American Leadership” permanent display, which was unveiled during a ceremony at the Pentagon July 13, 2011. The U.S. Navy recognized Ms. Hughes for her Senior Executive Service leadership as assistant auditor general for the Naval Audit Service. Her husband, Allen Hughes (Engr ’75 L/M); and son, Keith, accompanied her to the unveiling. A week later, Ms. Hughes received recognition for her 33 years of service to the U.S. Naval Audit Service and her promotion to director, Operations Directorate, Office of the Department of the Navy, Assistant for Administration at the Pentagon. Present with her at that ceremony, held at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., were her husband; son; daughter, Michelle Hughes (Col ’06); and brother, Everett Tabourn (Com ’79).</description>

Whitfield (Col &amp;rsquo;77, Law &amp;rsquo;81) spoke at the April 17, 2012, White House forum, &amp;ldquo;The State of Legal Assistance.&amp;rdquo; Mr. Whitfield is the executive director of Blue Ridge Legal Services, the legal aid society serving the Shenandoah and Roanoke valleys of Virginia. He was one of six directors to participate in a panel discussion at the forum, chosen from among the 135 organizations nationally that receive federal funding through the Legal Services Corporation, which co&#45;sponsored the event with the White House. The forum examined the state of civil legal assistance for low&#45;income Americans. Mr. Whitfield began working at Blue Ridge Legal Services as a law student at the University. He has been the organization&amp;rsquo;s executive director since 1989.</description>
