Fan's watercolor of the University Chapel

When Brittany Fan was considering what to paint for the Alumni Association's student art contest, she quickly crossed the Rotunda off her list.

"That's the first thing that comes to everyone's mind," says Fan, a 19-year-old, second-year studio art and elementary education major.

But she still wanted to paint some place easily recognizable that had a lot of meaning for students and alumni. She settled on the University Chapel, where she used to attend meetings for the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship before the group moved to another location on Grounds.

"It's a great place and a big part of the University's history," Fan says. The Blacksburg, Va., native's watercolor of the chapel was chosen as this year's winner of student art contest. Fan will receive $500 and her painting will be framed and displayed in Alumni Hall.
