Spanning the Globe

Regional officers tie together U.Va. network

No matter where you are in the country—or the world, for that matter—you’re never far from a U.Va. connection. A network of regional clubs helps alumni, parents and friends stay involved with the University and each other. Six officers cover designated geographical areas to coordinate activities of various programs, such as the Cavaliers Care community service projects and Student Send-Off events for new students and parents.

The UVaClubs program provides ties to alumni and parents in more than 100 communities in the U.S. and abroad, with activities ranging from social events to presentations by University faculty.

Sarah Brown (Col ’02), director of regional engagement, says UVaClubs are a good way to be involved in the University network. “Whether you are looking for professional networking opportunities, a way to continue the University’s tradition of service or the chance to relive the experience of listening to your favorite professor, your UVaClub is there to keep you connected,” she says.

If you’re curious about whom to call about events or programs in your area, check out the accompanying map. The regional officers can help coordinate a range of activities, including the following:

  • Social, cultural and sporting events Family and young alumni programs
  • Regional signature events
  • College fairs and evening programs
  • Student send-off events
  • Faculty speaking events
  • Networking and career panels
  • Discussion groups and book clubs
  • Community service programs
  • Scholarship and financial aid program support

This morning I received word that Elena Parent, Alumna of both the College & School of Law (don’t know the years of graduation)has announced that she is running for the Georgia State House of Representatives, District 81. Presently, this seat is held by Republican Jill Chambers. Ms. Parent is going to need all of the financial help that she can muster to contribute to the much needed shift in the balance of power in Georgia politics. I know little of Ms. Parent other than she has worked as a legislative aid for State Senator David Adelman(D-42), an eminently sane legislator in an assembly populated by all too many of the corrupt, feeble minded & inept. As a Virginia Alumnus, I thought it imperative that I pass the word that one of our own is taking the political plunge in Georgia.
